The Nova Scotia Centre for Craft and Design, and the Mary E. Black Gallery are proud to present Chalkworks by Rory MacDonald
Chalkworks is an ongoing examination of ceramic surface as a recorder for the present. The work interrogates the images of historical ceramic decoration and personal memory, within a fragile and even fugitive surface. No longer are these objects able to retain their role as permanent recorders typical of our expectation of the ceramic surface.
Equally important is the haptic nature of pots themselves. The desire to preserve the surface is conflicted with the desire to pick up the works. One must almost choose between a hierarchy of image over form.
In accepting the changing nature of the surfaces hopefully this becomes an advantage for the works to be become a new type of ceramic recording spaces where permanence is replaced with a commitment to layering.
